Using STAR BRITE Star Tron Fuel Tank Cleaner No. 093664

Star Tron Fuel Tank Cleaner helps loosen and break down sludge, varnish, gum and other organic deposits in diesel fuel tanks. The loosened contamination must then be removed by filtration or fuel polishing.

1. Inspect and sample the fuel

Take fuel samples from the top, middle and bottom of the tank. Check for:

  • Free water
  • Heavy sediment or sludge
  • Microbial contamination
  • Dark, cloudy or degraded fuel

Remove accumulated free water from the bottom of the tank before adding the cleaner. Star Tron is not a substitute for water removal.

2. Determine the amount required

Add 1 fluid ounce of Star Tron Fuel Tank Cleaner for every 4 gallons of diesel fuel.

Examples:

  • 100 gallons of fuel: 25 fluid ounces
  • 200 gallons: 50 fluid ounces
  • 250 gallons: 62.5 fluid ounces
  • One 64-ounce bottle treats approximately 250 gallons

Calculate the dosage using the actual amount of fuel in the tank, not the tank’s total capacity.

3. Add the cleaner

Wear fuel-resistant gloves and safety glasses. Work in a well-ventilated area away from heat, sparks, cigarettes and open flames.

Shake the container and pour the calculated amount directly into the diesel fuel tank.

4. Allow at least 24 hours

Let the treated fuel remain in the tank for at least 24 hours. During this time, the cleaner will begin loosening sludge, varnish and deposits.

Do not immediately operate equipment from a heavily contaminated tank. Loosened material may quickly clog fuel filters.

5. Polish the fuel

After the 24-hour treatment period, circulate the fuel through a properly sized fuel-polishing system.

  • Draw fuel from the lowest accessible point in the tank.
  • Return the cleaned fuel at the opposite end of the tank to promote circulation.
  • Use a water separator or purifier followed by particulate filtration.
  • Process at least one complete tank volume.
  • Heavily contaminated fuel may require additional turnovers.

6. Monitor the filters

Keep replacement filters available. Loosened sludge and deposits may cause filters to load rapidly.

  • Monitor filter pressure or flow continuously.
  • Stop the system if the pressure becomes excessive or flow drops sharply.
  • Replace dirty filters as required.
  • Drain collected water and contamination from the purifier or separator.
  • Dispose of contaminated fuel, water and filters according to local regulations.

7. Inspect and retest

After polishing, take another bottom and mid-tank sample. The fuel should be clear and bright, with no visible water or sediment.

If the fuel remains dirty:

  • Allow additional settling time.
  • Polish the fuel again.
  • Replace loaded filters.
  • Inspect the tank for remaining heavy bottom sludge.

A tank with severe deposits, corrosion or several inches of sludge may require mechanical tank cleaning. A fuel additive alone cannot remove large quantities of accumulated material.

Important precautions

  • Follow all directions and warnings printed on the Star Tron container.
  • Do not mix the cleaner with other additives unless compatibility has been confirmed.
  • Do not enter a fuel tank without proper confined-space equipment, training and authorization.
  • Do not rely on the cleaner alone to remove free water or heavy solid contamination.
  • Verify that the finished diesel fuel meets the equipment manufacturer’s requirements and applicable ASTM D975 fuel-quality standards before returning the tank to service.
